I’d like to share a true story that happened one day at work a couple of years ago to highlight how important the work rescue groups perform is to the welfare of thousands of animals around the world.<\/p>\n

One afternoon I answered the phone as I usually do and on the other end was a lady who was in desperate need to re-home her 10 month old Rottweiler pup.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not something that we have the resources for, but as her story unfolded, I could see that the pup had to be taken out of the situation asap or it would be put down.<\/p>\n

She told me that Harley had bitten her young child when he was only 15 weeks old, which I thought was quite unusual for a puppy. \u00a0The vet had advised her to surrender him but she didn\u2019t want to. \u00a0She took him home and he started \u00a0behaving well around her four children. \u00a0However, their landlord had visited on the previous weekend and when he leaned over to pat Harley, he attacked him and bit his hand quite badly, drawing a lot of blood.<\/p>\n

She said ever since then, Harley wouldn\u2019t go near anyone in the family and had growled at her menacingly. \u00a0She had become frightened of him and couldn\u2019t trust him around her young children. \u00a0She was pregnant again with a \u00a0child who would have special needs and she couldn\u2019t risk her health either. \u00a0He wouldn\u2019t eat any food, and by now this was 3 days after the \u2018attack\u2019 had occurred.\u00a0\u00a0She said he looked terrible \u2013 was thin and looked sick. \u00a0She said if he couldn’t be re-homed that day she’d call the ranger to have him taken away.<\/p>\n

Things were not sounding good for young Harley. \u00a0But I couldn\u2019t let this fellow go to the rainbow bridge without being given a second chance. \u00a0 I made some phone calls to a behaviourist and some rescue groups. \u00a0They agreed that it was a dire situation, and depending how aggressive he was, Harley might not be able to be saved.<\/p>\n

I spoke to a couple of lovely ladies from Homeless Hounds Rescue Group<\/a>, and it turned out they had a soft spot for Rotties. \u00a0They arranged to have someone visit the house that same night to assess whether they thought they would be able to re-home Harley safely. He was timid but friendly towards her\u00a0so they agreed to help.<\/p>\n

But they weren\u2019t going to be able to pick him up until after the weekend. \u00a0When this was conveyed to the owner, she became quite defensive and said she\u2019d rung the local council to arrange for a ranger to pick him up. \u00a0Based on what she\u2019d told me about his behaviour, Harley would be destroyed straight away if he went to a pound.<\/p>\n

Well, I went into a panic \u2013 I just felt this young boy needed to be helped. \u00a0Things the owner told me didn\u2019t seem to gel with what the assessor from the rescue group had seen. \u00a0With some frantic phone calls, texts and tears, we convinced the owner to let him remain at her house over night and we\u2019d pick him up the next day. \u00a0She agreed.<\/p>\n

Harley was picked up, taken to the vet for a checkup and taken home to the co-ordinator of the rescue group for assessment.\u00a0He\u00a0met her dogs, her cat and her child and was sweet and friendly.<\/p>\n

This is Harley \u2013 the so-called aggressive, frightened, skinny dog who was saved from certain death.<\/em><\/p>\n

The wonderful ladies from Homeless Hounds fostered him for a few days and searched for a potential forever home for Harley. \u00a0The last we heard was that he went to a wonderful home on 10 acres with two female Rotti\u2019s in country Victoria.<\/p>\n

Whilst I despair at the lengths some people will go to to get rid of an unwanted dog, I\u2019m so glad that I fell for the lies the previous owner told me about Harley and that I was\u00a0able to get the wheels in motion to get him out of the situation he found himself in.<\/p>\n

It really saddens me that people still treat dogs as commodities to be got rid of when they no longer want them. \u00a0I don\u2019t know how rescue groups have the strength to continue to do what they do, but I\u2019m glad they do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And this is just one story of a dog in a desperate situation needing to be found a new home. \u00a0There are literally thousands of stories like Harley’s every year in Australia and around the world. \u00a0People involved in animal rescue and welfare are worth their weight in gold and we thank them from the bottom of our heart.<\/p>\n
